Workshop Overview

For the past two years we've been fortunate to welcome Katie Garrison, a scientist specializing in the study of hemp russet mites, to Southern Oregon! Katie leads these 1-hour workshops. Katie discusses a variety of topics, and demonstrates how to easily and quickly use a microscope to monitor for pests. Workshop topics will include:
  • Cultural Controls & Best Practices
  • The Big Picture: Cannabis Pests
  • Scouting Methods
  • A Few Words on Data Analysis

Lead Scientist, Katie Garrison

Katie is an entomologist currently researching the ecology of hemp russet mite, Aculops cannibicola, and its host plant, Cannabis. She shares her unique knowledge of the under-researched Eriophyidae family of mites, through workshops, lectures and training seminars. Previously with Driscoll’s Research and Development Entomology Laboratory, Katie led a three-year study of the redberry mite, Acalitus essigi. Her interest in the Eriophyidae began during her work at the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s beneficial insectary, where she reared a biological pest control agent, the bindweed gall mite, Aceria malherbae. Katie completed her undergraduate work at the University of California Santa Cruz and Colorado Mesa University.
